UK scholarships offered by specific universities for international students

The University of Westminster has been running its international scholarship scheme for the past 10 years and has benefited more than 2,500 international students in that time. ‘We look for academic potential rather than academic excellence,’ says the university’s director of scholarships Colin Matheson. ‘For our full scholarships, we’re looking to help students who could not hope to study abroad without our help. Indeed, many can’t even afford to study locally. We’ve helped students who have arrived in the UK with next to nothing get high-powered jobs with government or business.’

The University of Westminster’s international scholarship scheme, with its total purse of £4 million, is the largest scheme in the UK but it’s not the only one. With money tight and the global economic situation making the cost of further study challenging, universities up and down the country are helping the world’s most promising postgraduates pursue their ambitions.

The University of Edinburgh, for example, launched its Global Development Academy master’s programme in 2010 and now makes four scholarships available each year to students who wish to study international development. Two of the places are specifically aimed at postgraduates from developing countries from Afghanistan or Angola to Zambia or Zimbabwe. Robert Lawrie, head of the university’s scholarships and student funding services, says his department has received almost 800 applications for these scholarships over the past two years alone.
